ch 2- lipids Flashcards
All lipids are ______ (hydrophilic or hydrophobic)
hydrophobic !! water fearing !!! Ooohh spoOOky ; lipids have many diverse functions
Types of Lipids
- fats and oils
- phospholipids
- steroids
function of fats
long term energy storage, insulation, protective cushions against organs
fats also called _____
triglyceride bc of its 3 part structure
fats are composed of
- glycerol backbone
- 3 fatty acids
Unsaturated Fats:
have double bonds, are bent
-liquid at room temperature (oils, veggie oil)
Saturated Fats:
full, straight, single bond (don’t have carbon double bonds)
-solid at room temperature
Transfat
form of unsaturated fats by adding Hydrogen!!! very unhealthy
Function of Phospholipids
form membranes by arranging themselves in a phospholipid bilayer that surrounds the cell
Phospholipids are composed of
two fatty acids and a phosphate group
Phospholipid Bilayer….
phosphate group is polar and hydrophilic (the head) and the fatty acids are non polar and hydrophobic (the tail)
Function of Steroids
may be used to form hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen
Structure of Steroids
backbone and 4 fused carbon rings
ex of steroid
Cholesterol is a steroid formed by the body that also enters the body as part of our diet; a component of an animal cell’s plasma membrane
