Ch. 3 based on slides Flashcards
Entropy
the measure of randomness/disorder
Free energy
the amount of energy available to do work after a chemical reaction has occurred
Define the energy of activation
the energy needed to start a chemical reaction
Define substrate concentration
increasing the amount of substrate causes an increase in the amount of the product formed (speeds up the reaction)
Define enzyme concentration
Increasing the amount of the enzyme increases the speed of the reaction
How could you speed up the movement of molecules to increase their probability of reacting (bumping into) one another?
HEAT
Define coupled reactions
the energy released by an exergonic reaction will drive an endergonic reaction
Where do the transition reaction and Krebs cycle occur?
In the matrix
Where does the ETC occur/is located?
Cristae (inner membrane)
Where does Glycolysis occur
Cytoplasm
Define Substrate Level Phosphorylation
The direct transfer of a phosphate from one molecule to ADP (glycolysis and Krebs)
Define Oxidative Phosphorylation
The process of producing ATP in the presence of O2
Define Chemiosmosis
The process of utilizing a concentration gradient to produce ATP
Define Beta Oxidation
the process of breaking down triglycerides (glycerol + fatty acids) into acetyl CoA
What is fermentation?
Ability to produce ATP without oxygen
