Ch 26 Flashcards
Define a rock
A naturally formed mixture containing rock fragments, minerals, and volcanic glass.
How are rocks identified?
By their composition and texture.
What does the texture tell about a rock?
Describes the shape, size, and arrangement of it’s componets.
Where do intrusive igneous rocks form from?
Molten rock that cools and crystallizes underground.
What type of molten rock do intrusive igneous rocks form from?
Magma
What is the name of the series that illustrates simultaneous crystallization of silicate mineral?
Bowen’s Reaction Series
What are the three types of magma?
Mafic (low silica), Intermediate, and Felsic (high silica).
Which magma type has a low silica content?
Mafic Magma
Which magma type has a high silica content?
Felsic Magma
Which type of crust has an abundant amount of quartz? (Oceanic or continental?)
Continental Crust
Which type of crust has little to no quartz? (Oceanic or continental?)
Oceanic and deep continental
Which type of igneous rock has a coarse grained texture?
Intrusive
Which type of igneous rock has a fine grained texture?
Extrusive
Do fine grained rocks cool slowly or quickly?
Quickly
What are the two specific texture types for extrusive igneous rocks?
Pumice and Scoria
Which texture is the type with holes left behind from rapid cooling?
Vesicular
Which texture is the type with two different crystal sizes because of different cooling rates?
Porphyritic
What type of rock has a vesicular (holey) texture?
Pumice
Define clasts
Small rock and mineral fragments
What types of erosion of rocks on Earth’s surface exposed to?
Water, wind, and other forces.
