Describe the GEOGRAPHY of ancient Greece

What is a peninsula?
A landmass surrounded by water on three sides

True or False? Early Greek settlers raised sheep, goats, and cattle.
FALSE. They did raise sheep (for their wool and meat) and goats (for their milk) but there was too little flatland for grazing for the ancient Greeks to raise cattle.
Why did the early Greek settlers consult an oracle before sending a voyage out to start a new colony?
The ancient Greeks wanted to get the blessing of the gods so they consulted the oracle (a holy person who spoke to the gods) to make sure the journey would be successful.
What is the main reason that the Greek communities started colonies?
There was not enough farmland on mainland Greece to feed their people so they needed to start colonies (or settlements in distant places)
What was the best known sweetner in the ancient world?
Honey from the bees they raised.
What were the main crops that were grown in ancient Greece?
Wheat, Barley, Grapes, Olives, Vegetables, Fruit & Nut trees
What did the ancient Greek city-states trade FOR?
Metal, gold, timber, iron, copper, wool, hides, more pottery, more oil, and grains
What animals did the ancient Greeks raise on the mainland?
Sheep, goats, pigs, bees, oxen, donkeys, mules, and chickens.
What are the advantages of traveling by land?
Stopping at inns for shelter along the way; no need for a boat
What are the disadvantage of traveling by land?
Wagon wheels can become broken on the rugged, unpaved roads or could get stuck in the mud; bandits could rob your slow moving group along the way; difficult to travel with all of the “stuff” you had to bring with;
