Ch 2.4 Droughts and Floods Flashcards
Drought
An area experiences a long period of scarce rainfall.
Flash Flood
A sudden, violent flood that occurs within a few hours, or even minutes, of a storm.
Levees
Sediments deposits build up into long ridges.
What causes drought?
A long period of scared rainfall
Can drought be predicted?
It is difficult to predict drought
How to prepare drought?
- Conserve water
- Plant drought-resistant plants
- Save water in reservoirs
What are the effect of drought?
- Plants and animal die; widespread famine (no food)
2. More fire because it is dry
Can drought be controlled?
Little can be done to control drought, but we can conserve water to prepare for drought
What caused flood?
- Too much rainfall
2. Fast melting of snow
Can flood be predicted?
Yes, we can use weather satellite to predict flood
How to prepare and control for flood?
- Building dams in areas that are likely to have floods
- Sediments are deposited alongside the river over time, and build up levees to keep water inside the river banks. We can strengthen the levees with sandbags.
What are some flood safety?
- Move uphill
- Get out of cars
- Watch out for utility lines
- Watch out for mudslides
- Watch out for water pollution after the flood
