Ch 2.2 Water to drink Flashcards
Concentration
The amount of a substance found in a certain volume of another substance
Water quality
The measurement of substance in water besides water molecules
pH
The measurement of how acidic or basic the water is
Filtration
The process which water goes through a series of screens, and large particles cannot go through
Hardness
The combined level of calcium and magnesium in water
Sewage
Waste water, or water with different kinds of wastes
Coagulation
The process in which particles stick to the flocs
What are the steps for drinking water treatment?
- Filtration: water goes through series of screens to remove trash
- Chemicals are added to form sticky flocs
- Floc sink to bottom
- Filter water again through sand to remove algae, bacteria and chemical
- Chlorine is added to kill organisms
- Water is aerated for better taste and odor
- Add sodium or lime to soften the water
What are the steps for septic system?
- sewage enters the system through the inlet pipe, bacteria breaks down the waste
- Less-dense waste float to the top of the septic tank, needs to be pumped out
- Denser waste sink to the bottom of the septic tank, needs to be pumped out
- Water and waste go to the leach field through the outlet pipe
