ch 22 respiratory system Flashcards
What is respiration?
Ventilation of lungs (Breathing)
what are the major functions of the respiratory system?
Gas exchange
Communication
Olfaction
Acid-base balance
BP regulation
what are the organs of the respiratory system?
nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
What is the Conducting division of respiratory system?
Passages that serve only for airflow
No gas exchange
Nostrils through major bronchioles
what is the Respiratory division of the respiratory system?
Consists of alveoli and other gas exchange regions
What is the Upper respiratory tract comprised of?
Nose through larynx
What is the Lower respiratory tract comprised of?
organs of the thorax
Trachea through lungs
Name the structure labelled A?

Pharynx
Name the structure labelled B?

Larynx
Name the structure labelled C?

Trachea
Name the structure labelled D?

Right lung
Name the structure labelled E?

Epiglottis
Name the structure labelled F?

Esophagus
Name the structure labelled G?

Left lung
Name the structure labelled H?

Left main bronchus
Name the structure labelled I?

Lobar bronchus
Name the structure labelled J?

Segmental bronchus
What are the main functions of the nose in respiration?
–Warms, cleanses, and humidifies inhaled air
–Detects odors
–Serves as a resonating chamber that amplifies voice
What is the structure labelled A?

Pharyngeal tonsil
What is the structure labelled B?

Palatine tonsil
What is the structure labelled C?

Lingual tonsil
What is the structure labelled D?

Epiglottis
What is the structure labelled E?

Trachea
What is the structure labelled F?

Esophagus
Name the 3 regions of the pharynx
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
Which regions does the Nasopharynx cover?
- Posterior to nasal apertures and above soft palate
- Receives auditory tubes and contains pharyngeal tonsil
Which regions does the Oropharynx cover?
- Space between soft palate and epiglottis
- Contains palatine tonsils
Which regions does the Laryngopharynx cover?
- Epiglottis to cricoid cartilage
- Esophagus begins at that point
What type of epithelium covers the nasopharynx?
pseudostratified columnar epithelium
What type of epithelium covers the oropharynx and larygnopharynx?
•stratified squamous epithelium
What do the muscles of the pharynx assist with?
swallowing and speech
What is the Larynx (voice box)
- cartilaginous chamber about 4 cm long
- Keeps food and drink out of the airway
What is the Epiglottis?
flap of tissue that guards the superior opening of the larynx
During swallowing, extrinsic muscles of larynx pull larynx upward
Tongue pushes epiglottis down to meet it
Closes airway and directs food to esophagus behind it
What is the role of Vestibular folds of the larynx
play greater role in keeping food and drink out of the airway
