Ch 2.2 : Properties of Water Flashcards
1
Q
Properties of Water
A
Water molecules are slightly polar because hydrogen and oxygen atoms within it form polar covalent bonds
- Substances that readily form bonds with water (dissolves) are hydrophilic (“water-loving”)
- Substances that repel water are hydrophobic (“water-fearing”)
2
Q
Hydrophilic
A
Substances that readily form bonds with water (dissolves) are hydrophilic (“water-loving”)
3
Q
Hydrophobic
A
Substances that repel water are hydrophobic (“water-fearing”)
4
Q
Water as a Heat Sink
- Lots of energy
- Evaporate
- Cooled , insulation
A
It takes a lot of energy to break the bonds within a water molecule
- Water doesn’t evaporate until it reaches a high temperature
- When cooled, ice floats and it provides insulation for the water underneath
5
Q
The Universal Solvent
- Hydrogen b –> Absorb & release HE
- Polarity –> attracted to
- Passes through –> move
A
The hydrogen bonds in water allow it to absorb and release heat energy more slowly than other substances
- Water’s polarity means it is attracted to many different types of molecules
- When water passes through locations (air, ground, plant/animal etcs) it can move particles, such as chemicals and minerals
6
Q
Surface Tension
A
Means that there is greater attraction of water molecules to each other than to air molecules
