Ch 1.2 : Process of Science Flashcards
1
Q
Steps of the Scientific Method
A
- Make an observation
- Background
- Ask a question
- Form a hypothesis (that answers the question)
- Experiment (to test the prediction)
- Analyze the results
- Conclusion
- Hypothesis is supported → Report results
- Hypothesis is unsupported → Report results AND try again
2
Q
Deductive vs inductive Reasoning
A
Deductive reasoning : a form of logical thinking that uses a general principle or law to predict specific results
Inductive reasoning : a form of logical thinking that uses related observations to arrive at a general conclusion
3
Q
Falsifiable Hypothesis
A
A hypothesis that is able to be disproven by experimental results
4
Q
Variables & Control
A
Variable : any part of the experiment that can vary or change
Control : a part of the experiment that does not change
