Ch 22: Neuropsychology Flashcards
What is neuropsychology?
Branch of neuroscience concerned with understandings of how the brain produces behavior.
Experimental branch of neuropsychology
Intact brains
Testing is used to study healthy brains throughout the lifespan
Clinical branch of neuropsychology
Brains with lesions
Testing is used to relate behavior changes to the lesion sites
What are the 4 steps of the neuropsychological assessment process?
Record/review
Clinical interview
Standardized testing
Report & feedback
Cognitive rehab
Systematic functionally oriented service of therapeutic cognitive activities, based on an assessment and understanding of the persons brain behavior deficits.
Cognitive rehab process (four parts)
Cognitive education (strengths/weaknesses)
Cognitive training (restorative)
Strategy training (compensatory)
Functional training (daily activities)
What are Gall and Spurzheim’s crucial concepts that catalyzed the growth of neuropsychology?
1.cortex performs specific operations in the brain
2.cortex interacts with other regions of the CNS
3.corpus callosum allows communication between two hemispheres
Established the concept of localization of brain function
What is the functional systems model?
behaviors consist of a number of simple mental operations, each mental operation is localized in a specific area of the brain
Restorative vs compensatory approach
Restorative- based on neuroplasticity, reestablish or develop new functions
Compensatory- based on adaptability, use of strategies that make use of residual intact abilities
