Ch 10: Cognitive Complications Flashcards
Cognition
Described as a complex collection of conscious mental activity such as attention, perception, comprehension, remembering, or using language
can generally be thought of as an individuals ability to mentally represent, organize, or manipulate the environment
Which 2 common factors contribute to increased caregiver burden and cost of care?
Cognition and communication dysfunction
What are the 5 subtypes of attention?
Focused Sustained Selective Alternating Divided
Focused attention
perceive and respond to internal and external stimuli
Sustained attention
Ability to maintain attention to complete a task accurately and efficiently over a period of time.
Selective attention
Ability to maintain attention in the presence of distractions
Ex: focusing on speaker at conference while others are talking
Alternating attention
Ability to shift between tasks that demand different behavioral or cognitive skills
Ex: receptionist switching between answering phones and greeting people at desk
Divided attention
Requires the ability to respond simultaneously to multiple task demands while maintaining speed and accuracy
Ex: cooking main course while timing broccoli
Sensory memory
Holds info from the senses for a few seconds immediately after the item is perceived
Iconic Echoic Hepatic Olfactory Gustatory
STM
Recall of info from a few minutes to a few hours ago
What’s the difference between STM and working memory?
STM passively holds information while working memory actively processes it
Working memory
Temporary storage and active processing of info
LTM
Permanent consolidation and storage of info.
Diffuse axonal injury is often associated with deficits in?
information processing speed
Three levels of impairments in metacognition
awareness of deficits caused by the injury, awareness of the functional implications of those deficits, awareness to set realistic goals
