Ch 21 Air Pollution Flashcards
Chronic inflammatory respiratory disorder. Attacks narrow airways, can be fatal
Asthma
Material added to atmosphere that harms living organisms, affects climate or impacts structures
Air pollution
Air pollutants released directly (cars, power plants)
Primary air pollutants
Air pollutants react with one another or with other chemicals in the air
secondary air pollutants
Pollutants released during fossil fuel combustion react with atmospheric oxygen in the presence of sunlight
ground level ozone
particles small enough to remain aloft in air for long periods
particulate matter PM
Hazy pollution that contains variety of pollutants including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, tropospheric ozone, and particulates
smog
pollution from readily identifiable source such as a smokestack
point source pollution
Pollution that enters air from dispersed or mobile sources
nonpoint source pollution
6 “criteria pollutants” evaluated / regulated by EPA
sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ground level ozone, lead, particulate matter (PM)
a variety of chemicals that readily evaporate but don’t dissolve in water
VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
