Ch 18 Upper Respiratory Disorders Flashcards
Anti tussives OPIODS
Codeine suppresses cough through its action on the CNS
Codeine is used for chronic nonproductive cough
What is the prototype med of antitussive OPIODS
Codeine
Hydrocodone
Antitussive OPIODS are contraindicated in who
Clients who have acute asthma, head trauma, liver and renal dysfunction and acute alcoholism
Antitussives NONOPIOIDS
Used as a cough suppressant
What is the prototype drug of antitussive NONOPIOIDS
dextromethorphan ( found in many different products for cough such as robotitussin.
Other medications: benzonatate ( Tessalon) diphenhydramine ( Benadryl)
What are drug interactions of antitussive NONOPIODS
Can cause high fever when used within 2 weeks of MAOI
What are interactions of antitussive NONOPIODS
Can cause high fever if used within 2 weeks of MAOI
Expectorants
Prototype drug: guaifenesin ( mucinex)
Promotes increased cough production thru increasing mucous secretions. This allows person to decrease chest congestion by coughing out secretions.
Although available as a expectorant alone it can be combined with antitussives either opioid or NONOPIOIDS , or as a decongestant for treating symptoms of colds, allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, or for cough caused by lower respiratory disorders.
What are adverse effects of guaifenesin ( mucinex)
GI upset, drowsiness, dizziness, allergic reaction ( rash)
What are contraindications of guaifenesin ( mucinex)
Pregnancy category C
may. To be recommended for children
What should the nurse advise the client. About regarding guaifenesin ( mucinex)
Increase fluids to promote liquefying secretions
Avail in tabs which should not be crushed & capsules that may be opened to sprinkle on food.
Mucolytics (acetylcysteine)
Prototype: ( Mucomyst, acetadote)
Other meds: hypertonic saline
What does mucolytics do (acetylcysteine)
It enhances the flow of secretions in the respiratory passages
Used in clients who have acute and chronic pulmonary disorders exacerbated by large amounts of secretions
Used in clients who have CF
acetylcysteine is the antidote to acetaminophen poisoning
What are adverse effects of mucolytics ( acetylcysteine) when administered orally
Aspirations and bronchospasm
What are contraindications and precautions of mucolytics (acetylcysteine)
Pregnancy category B
Should not be used for clients at risk for GI HEMMORRHAGE
caution in clients with peptic ulcer disease, esophageal varices and severe liver disease.
