Ch 16 - Poultry nutrition Flashcards
Changes in poultry genetics and productivity during the last 50 years
Slaughter weights doubled, 60% reduction in feed per gain
feed additives in broiler production
some don’t use antimicrobial
Embryonic diets
embyonic to post-hatch transition is a major metabolic challenge for chicks
Nutrient deficencies
Daily feed consumption may decrease or mildly increase, toxicity usually decreases consumption
Carbohydrates
cereal grains, readily digested, must be processed. Young ones need crumbles
Grit
essential with whole grains, grinds feed in gizzard. not needed with mash or pellets or crumbles
Amino acid requirements
Arginine, glycine, cysteine
some protein sources
soybean meal, cottonseed meal, distillers grains,
lipids
increase overall energy concentration
interest in sexing birds
large difference in nutrient requirements, body size. sexing at hatch is labor intensive.
