Forestry fire hose
A valved device that splits a single hose into two, allowing each hose to be turned on and off independently.
Gated wye

A nozzle with a rated discharge of less than 350 gpm (1325 L/min).
Handline nozzle
A short section of supply hose that is used to draft water from a static source such as a river, lake, or portable drafting basin to the suction side of the fire pump on a fire department engine or into a portable pump.
Hard suction hose
Indicators on the male and female threaded couplings that indicate where the threads start. These indicators should be aligned before fire fighters start to thread the couplings together.
Higbee indicators
A piece of hardware (excluding nozzles) generally intended for connection to fire hose to control or convey water. (NFPA 1962)
Hose appliance
A device that protects a hose when it is necessary for a vehicle to drive over a hose.
Hose bridge
A device used to compress a fire hose to stop water flow.
Hose clamp
A device used to stop a leak in a fire hose or to join hose that have damaged couplings.
Hose jacket
The inside portion of a hose that is in contact with the flowing water; also called the hose inner jacket.
Hose liner
A device that is placed on the edge of a roof and is used to protect hose as it is hoisted up and over the roof edge.
Hose roller
A monitor that attaches to the rungs of a vehicle-mounted aerial ladder. (NFPA 1964, 1965)
Ladder pipe
A hose 3.5 in. (89 mm) or larger that is designed to move large volumes of water to supply master stream appliances, portable hydrants, manifolds, standpipe and sprinkler systems, and fire department pumpers from hydrants and in relay. (NFPA 1410)
Large-diameter hose
A nozzle that flows 40 gpm (151 L/min) or less.
Low-volume nozzle
Devices used to produce high volume water streams for large fires. Most discharge between 350 gpm (1325 L/min) and 1500 gpm (5678 L/min), though much larger capacities are available. These devices include deck guns and portable ground monitors.
Master stream appliance
A nozzle with a rated discharge of 350 gpm (1325 L/min) or greater. (NFPA 1964)
Master stream nozzle
A fungus that can grow on hose if the hose is stored wet. It can damage the jacket of a hose.
Mildew
A construction consisting of a combination of two separately woven
reinforcements (double jacket) or two or more reinforcements interwoven. (NFPA 1962)
Multiple-jacket
A device for use in applications requiring special water discharge patterns, directional spray, or other unusual discharge characteristics. (NFPA 13)
Nozzle
A device that enables the fire fighter at the nozzle to start or stop the flow of water.
Nozzle shut-off valve
A nozzle that can be driven through sheet metal or other material to deliver a water stream to that area.
Piercing nozzle
A monitor that can be lifted from a vehicle-mounted bracket and moved to an operating position on the ground by not more than two people. (NFPA 1965)
Portable monitor
A fitting used to connect a small hose line or pipe to a larger hose line or pipe. (NFPA 1142)
Reducer
A valve that is attached to a fire hydrant to allow the operator to turn the hydrant on without flowing water into the hose line.
Remote-controlled hydrant valve
Fittings on threaded couplings that aid in coupling the hose. Also referred to as rocker pins.
