Ch 14 Protection Flashcards
How is the brain protected?
Skull, meninges, cerebrospinal fluid, blood brain barrier
3 meningeal layers of the brain
Dura mater (outer), arachnoid mater (middle), pia mater (inner)
Two layers of the dura mater
periosteal layer, meningeal layer
What does the periosteal layer of the dura mater touch?
outer layer; lines the cranial bones
What does the meningeal layer of the dura mater touch?
inner layer; lines the arachnoid mater
Pia mater function
covers blood vessels of central nervous system
Arachnoid villi function and location
- located in the arachnoid mater
- extends into the sinus and reabsorbs cerebrospinal fluid into bloodstream
3 dural folds
Falx cerebri, falx cerebelli, tentorium cerebelli
Falx cerebri function
separates right and left cerebral hemispheres of the brain
Falx cerebelli function
separates the right and left cerebellar hemispheres
Tentorium cerebelli
separates the cerebellum and cerebrum
Ventricle definition
internal chamber in the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid
What do ventricles contain
cerebrospinal fluid
How many ventricles are there?
4; 2 lateral, third and fourth
What type of neuroglia line the ventricles and monitor the cerebrospinal fluid?
ependymal cells
Ependyma definition
type of neuroglia that lines ventricles and covers choroid plexus
Ependymal cells function
modify the filtrate
Function of cerebrospinal fluid
physical protection, chemical protection, circulation
Where is cerebrospinal fluid produced
choroid plexus
What is the choroid plexus
spongy mass of blood capillaries on the floor of each ventricle
Flow of production and return of cerebrospinal fluid
- CSF secreted by choroid plexus
- CSF flows through interventricular foramen into third ventricle
- choroid plexus in third ventricle adds more CSF
- CSF flows down cerebral aqueduct to fourth ventricle
- choroid plexus in fourth ventricle adds more CSF
- CSF flows out two lateral apertures and one median aperture
- CSF fills subarachnoid space and bathes external surfaces of brain and spinal cord
- arachnoid villi reabsorbs CSF into bloodstream of the superior sagittal sinus
What are meninges
protective membranes that envelope the brain
Meningitis definition
inflammation of the meninges
