Psychoanalytic Theory
Conscious vs. unconscious mind
Unconscious Mind
Contains thoughts & desires that our conscious mind wants to deny to keep material unavailable to conscious mind
Id
Sigmund Freud, Personality Structure; the only part of the personality that is present at birth; pleasure principle
Ego
Around age 2-3, it is the only conscious part of personality; does it job with defense mechanisms
Superego
Around age 5, Sense of morality (right and wrong) and is also unconscious
Defense Mechanisms
Where the egos does its job of navigating through the conscious and unconscious
Repression
We keep a thought deep into the unconscious mind and you don’t let it happen
Denial
The thought leaks into your behavior but you insist that it is not there
Displacement
You put the thought and emotion onto a safe person
Projection
You see a feeling into someone else and seeing it as if the feeling is on them and not on you
Sublimation
You turn your emotion into a safe form
Regression
We cope by engaging in younger behaviors; things we did that helped us when we were younger
Humanistic Theory
Human growth is a process of moving towards self-actualization where our perceive and ideal selves come very close to one another
Cognitive Factors
Knowledge, expectations, and attitudes
Environmental Factors
Social norms, access in community, and influence on others
Behavioral Factors
Skills, practice, and self-efficiency
Traits
Traits are stable personality characteristics
Trait Theory
Traits can be measured and used to diagnose disorders, predict therapeutic outcomes, or aid in counseling
MMPI
inventory used to diagnose disorders
Myers-Briggs
inventory used for counseling and retreats
Conscious Mind
involves all the things you are currently aware of and are thinking about
Conditional Positive Regard
creates a large gap between our perceived and ideal selves
Perceived Self
the view we have about ourselves, our characteristics, and the judgments we make about the traits we have
Ideal Self
the person you want to be
Introvert
Being alone to process your thoughts
Extravert
Being with other people to talk out your thoughts
iNtuitive
The level of data you are comfortable with
