Ch 11 - The Practice of Linear Structure Flashcards
answer print
print from a conformed negative with a mixed soundtrack
bins
electronic files that hold groups of media clips in an organized fashion for use in nonlinear editing
bus
row of buttons on a switcher used for live editing during a television production
capturing
acquisition of sound and image information
chromakey
visual effect that electronically cuts a hole in one image and replaces it with another, selecting the part of an image that contains a certain color to create a hole
clips
pieces of visual media material used in the nonlinear video editing process
codec
compressor/decompressor; mathematical model that determines exactly how audio or video decompression should take place
compositing
part of production that works with layers of the image, replacing part of the image with another (green screen or other matting techniques, as well as adding lighting effects or translucent layers)
conforming
process of cutting and splicing a film negative from which an answer print can be made
counter
device that counts the rotation of heads or the passage of tape or film through the machine
crossfade
audio transition, in which one source gradually gets softer while another becomes louder, that can be used to soften an abrupt change or signal a change in time or place
cut
instantaneous and complete transition from one source to another
digital intermediates
the result of importing a piece of digital media into a software application, manipulating it, and exporting it again
digitize
to convert an analog audio and/or video signal to a digital format
dissolve
visual transition in which one source gradually disappears by becoming transparent while another appears by becoming opaque; can be used to soften an abrupt change or signal a change in time or place
edge number
markings on film that identify the location of individual frames, as well as manufacturer product information (also called key numbers or footage numbers)
edit decision list (EDL)
a final list of shots used in the video editing process, identified by time code
edit plan
written list of decisions as to which logged shots of video or film footage are going to be used in an edited cut and in what order they will appear
fade
dissolve to or from black (or any solid color) or a gradual change in audio volume to or from silence
file management
organization of files associated with a media project software application, including an understanding of the difference between media files and project files, and practicing consistent file backup procedures
fine cut
final version of an edited film, ready for release
HDMI
high definition media interface; standard for transmitting uncompressed digital video and audio signals
ingesting
bringing files into a nonlinear editing system
interframe
type of video compression in which several frames are read and then averaged to determine what material is not needed
intraframe
a type of video compression that takes place within each frame
key
electronically cuts a hole in one image and replaces it with another
live mixing
concept of mixing down and reproducing or broadcasting (and/or recording) a multichannel audio source during its original creation
live switching
concept of editing “on the fly” during a television production of any live performance or event
log
written record of footage, including the order in which each shot appears and its location on the tape or film reel
luminance key
visual effect that electronically cuts a hole in one image and replaces it with another, selecting the part of an image that falls below a certain brightness level to create a hole
mag stock
audio tape with sprocket holes that match that of film stock
nonlinear editing (NLE)
system in which sound and/or image is digitized and edited with random access capabilities and the ability to insert and delete material
offline editing
first stage of the video editing process, with more emphasis placed on structure and content than image quality
online editing
final stage of the video editing process, with an emphasis on image and sound quality, effects, and transitions
pointer
type of file within a nonlinear editing project (such as a clip or bin) that serves as a reference to the location of an actual media file
rough cut
first edit of a film, generally consisting of synch sound and straight cuts
running time
elapsed time of a piece of exposed film or recorded tape
segue
audio transition that involves a rapid level drop of the original source and a quick fade-in of the second source
signal flow
path taken by a signal
split screen
partially completed wipe, most often used to divide the screen and show two separate locations simultaneously at full opacity
superimposition
partially completed dissolve, appearing as a ghosted image of two different sources, both filling the whole screen
telecine
combination of film projector and video camera
timecode
electronic signal that provides a discrete numerical reference for each frame of video
timeline
graphical representation of the “linear” edited sequence being constructed within a nonlinear editing program
transcoding
converting one type of digital file into another
transcription
written log of a subject’s spoken words
transitions
ways of getting from one piece of visual or aural material to another
USB
universal serial bus; a widely used connection for transferring digital files from one device to another
wipe
visual transition that starts in one portion of the frame and replaces one image with another in a variety of directions
workprint
straight print of a camera negative used to complete a rough cut
