Ch 10 - The Theory of Linear Structure Flashcards
180-degree line
imaginary axis that connects two subjects (guided by their respective gazes) or is defined by directional movement and provides a constriction for camera movement; remaining on one side of the line maintains consistent continuity of screen direction
b-roll
visual footage used to support the soundtrack (narration or interview) in a documentary film or video production
continuity
the result of following stylistic conventions that create a logical, linear story
deductive reasoning
method of gathering information that starts with larger context (ex. wide shot) and gradually reveals the details
eyeline
direction in which a subject or actor is looking
inductive reasoning
method of gathering information that starts with details (ex. close-ups) and gradually reveals the larger context
jump cut
edit that breaks the continuity of a film or video production
matched cut
edit of two shots that matches one point in the action from two different angles or shot sizes to create the sense of continuous action
montage
editing technique used in film and video production that allows the viewer to create interpretive meaning by contrasting and comparing the content of adjacent shots or the relationship between the sound and image
motivated edit
edit justified by the action or content of a sequence
reverse angle
shot taken from the opposite angle of the action from a first shot that does not cross the 180-degree line
sound bite
short piece of interview footage
verbally driven structure
approach to creating a media production where the primary story or information is provided by narration
