direct democracy
A form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives

A political theory holding that in a democracy, the government ought to do what the majority of the people want
median voter
A mathematical result showing that the voter with the ideological preference in the middle of the ranking of voters must be satisfied and approve of a majority-rule winning outcome
referenda
A general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision.
representative democracy
A system of government in which citizens elect representatives, or leaders, to make decisions about the laws for all the people.
tyranny of the majority
The potential of a majority to monopolize power for its own gain to the detriment of minority rights and interests.
winner-take-all-system
The single winner of an election is the person with the most votes; there is no requirement that the winner gain an absolute majority of votes.
