Ch 10 Photosynthesis Exam 3 Flashcards
Photosynthesis
-use of sunlight to manufacture carbohydrates
-links together light capturing reactions and sugar producing(Calvin Cycle)
-CO2+H2O->CH2O+O2
-water and carbon dioxide don’t react with one another
Autotrophs
-make their own food
-depended on by heterotrophs
Heterotrophs
-obtain sugars and other macromolecules from other organisms
-depend on autotrophs
Chloroplasts
-contain light capturing pigments
Chlorophylls
-absorb strongly in blue and red
-provide plants with green appearance
Carotenoids
-absorb blue and green
-appear yellow, orange, or red
Resonance Energy Transfer
-energy in electron is transferred to nearby pigment
Reduction/Oxidation
-energy is transferred to a new compound
The Antenna Complex
-performs resonance energy transfer
-moves electrons along like a wave towards the reaction center
The Reaction Center
-location of two specialized chlorophyll molecules
-translate the absorbed photon to an electron acceptor
-redox reaction
-very important step for photosynthesis
Photosystems
-handle the electrons
-produce ATP and NADPH
-feed into the Calvin Cycle where carbohydrates are produced
Z Scheme*
-connects Photosystems I and II
Fixation Phase
-first step
-CO2 reacts with ribulose bisphosphate(RuBP) producing a 3 Carbon organic acid (3PGA)
-RuBP+3CO2->6 3PGA
Reduction Phase
-second step
-3PGA is reduced to a phosphorylated sugar glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate G3P (glucose building block)
-6 3PGA+6 ATP+6 NADPH=5 G3P(to step 3) and 1 G3P yield
Regeneration Phase
-third step
-G3P keeps cycle going to regenerate rubisco
5 G3P+3 ATP->3 RuBP
