Ch. 10-15 Flashcards

Q

In what ways did Jem and Scout look down upon Atticus? Why is the encounter with Tim Johnson important between him and the kids?

A

Jem and Scout feel Atticus is too old to be much of a father in the way other kids’ parents are. They criticize him for not playing sports with them and believe he can’t do anything brave or heroic. When Atticus shoots Tim Johnson, they begin to see that their dad not only has hidden talents but may be stronger and more heroic than they originally believed.

Q

Why did Atticus give up shooting? What does Jem mean when he says he’s going to be a “gentleman” like his father?

A

Atticus is a firm believer in equality. He even goes so far as to hide his own talents in order to make himself stand on more common ground with those around him. He also dislikes violence which may have lead him to give up shooting. Jem recognizes his dad’s integrity and wants to be like him. He is beginning to understand that there are more ways to be a man than shooting, fighting, etc.

Q

Explain the situation between Jem and Mrs. Dubose. Why was Mrs. Dubose truly a courageous woman? In what way is this courage like Atticus’s bravery in taking the rape case?

A

Mrs. Dubose was courageous because she knew that, regardless if she beat her addiction to morphine, she was going to die. She also understood that overcoming her addiction would be painful but she attempted it (and succeeded) nevertheless. This is similar to Atticus because he knows it is unlikely he will win Tom Robinson’s trial but attempts it anyway.
