- always wants Scout to behave more like Jem
- “She had been with us ever since Jem was born, and I had felt her tyrannical presence as long as I could remember,” (6)
- like a mother
Explain the situation in the Radley House. What do you think happened between Boo and Mr. Radley? What did Atticus mean when he said “there are other ways of making people into ghosts”?
The Radley house is very remote from the neighborhood. The house is treated like a haunted house.
I think Mr. Radley kept Boo inside the house by a form of intimidation.
Atticus meant that removing someone from society can make him/her a ghost.
What was Jem’s description of Boo? What was it based upon?
“Boo was about 6-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained-if you ate animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten;his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time,” (14).
It’s based upon the town’s gossip.
Why were many of the kids repeating the first grade?
Because they have to leave early to work on the farm.
What kind of family were the Cunninghams? What was Calpurnia trying to teach Scout when she sent her into the kitchen after pointing out Walter’s odd eating habits?
The Cunninghams were farm people.
Calpurnia was teaching Scout that you can’t just think that you’re better than someone just because your family looks better off than theirs.
What kind of family were the Ewells?
“Atticus said the Ewells had been the disgrace of Maycomb for 3 generations. None of them had done an honest day’s work…They were people, but they lived like animals,” (33).
The Ewells are stubborn, rude, ignorant, and filthy. They are too proud of themselves.
What was Atticus talking about when he advised Scout to climb into Ms. Caroline’s skin and walk around?
Atticus is telling Scout that you understand a person more if you consider things from his point of view.
