ch 1 sec 6 Flashcards
longest tooth overall
maxillary canine
longest root overall
maxillary canine
widest crownmesiodistally
mandibular first molar
widest crown buccolingually
maxillary first molar
narrowest crown mesiodistally
mandibular central incisor
greatest cervical line curve
mesial or maxillary incisor
tooth with longest crown
mandibular canine
define cusp
pyramidal elevation with a peak called cusp tip
where are cusps located on molars and premolars?
occlusal surfaces
where are cusps located on canines?
incisal surface
How many cusps do canines have?
1
how many cusps do premolars have?
2-3
how many cusps do molars have?
3-5
cusp ridges
many cusps have 4 cusp ridges that converge to create a 4-sided pyramid with rounded surfaces (should make an X on the tip)
triangular ridges are located where?
on the major cusps of posterior teeth extending fro cusp tip to depression (sulcus)
describe a transverse ridge
when a triangular ridge from a buccal cusp joins with a triangular ridge from a lingual cusp
a transverse ridge crosses the occlusal surface in what direction?
buccolingual direction
oblique ridge is found where?
ONLY on maxillary molars
A single cusp from a canine can have 4 ridges emanating from its cusps tip called?
mesial cusp ridge, distal cusp ridge, labial cusp ridge, lingual cusp ridge
What is a cingulum? (cingula)
it is the prominence or bulge in the cervical third of the lingual surface of the crown
Is the mesial marginal ridge normally larger or smaller than the distal marginal ridge?
mesial is normally longer
What is the crest of curvature?
the greatest bulge on the buccal surface (or height of contour). This bulge is located on the cervical ridge of permanent molars (2nd)
What are Mamelons?
are three small bulges or tubercles on the incisal edges of newly erupted incisors
Can you easily find mamelons?
They are usually rubbed off on adult dentition
What are perikymata?
are the numerous, minute horizontal ridges on the enamel of newly erupted permanent teeth
What is an occlusal sulcus of a tooth?
a broad V-shaped depression or valley on the occlusal surface of each posterior teeth running mesiodeistally between buccal and lingual cusps
fossa means
despression
define groove
linear channel often found between cusps in the depth offthe sulcus and between ridges
Purpose of a groove?
to serve as escape ways as the lower jaw moves, partially chewed food squirts out through the grooves towards the tongue and cheek
developmental grooves
separate cusps and other major portions of a tooth formed from the developmental lobes
central groove
on posterior teeth separating buccal from lingual cusps
buccal groove
separates mesiobuccal and distobuccal cusps on mandibular molars
mesiobuccal groove
separates mesiobuccal cusp from distobuccal cusp on mandibular molars
distobuccal groove
separates distobuccal cusp from smallest distal cusp on mandibular molars
lingual groove
between the mesiolingual and distolingual surface on mandibular molars, don’t typically extend into onto lingual surface on maxillary molars
buccal groove
between mesiobuccal and distobuccal cusps that does not normally extend onto the buccal surface on maxillary molars
supplemental grooves
are additional occlusal grooves that are NOT developmental. Not normally given a specific name because they do not occur in same areas of same teeth
mesial and distal fossa
are shallow depressions on posterior teeth within the occlusal table
pit
is at the depth of a fossa where teh central groove joins the fossa grooves
distobuccal developmental groove
runs toward the distobuccal line angle of the tooth
Where would you find central fossa?
on most 3-cusped premolars and molars
lingual fossa is found where?
on anterior teeth, its shallow and broad located on the lingual surface
define caries
tooth decay
what is the proper name for tooth decay aka cavities?
caries
Where are the ‘carious pits and fissures’ most likely to be located?
1) depth of deep grooves and pits on occlusal surface of posterior teeth
2) i buccal grooves that extend onto the buccal surface on mandibular molars
3) in lingual grooves that extend onto the lingual surface of maxillary molars
4) on the lingual surface of maxillary incisors where the lingual fossa joins the cingulum
root trunk
is like a trunk base, is partof the root of a multirooted molar or 2-rooted premolar next to the cementoenamel junction
furcation
is the place on a multirooted tooth where the root trunk divides into separate roots
Furcation: difference between bifurcation and trifurcation?
bifurcation= two rooted teeth trifurcation= 3 rooted teeth
What is a furcal region?
it is the region or space between two or more roots, found apical to where the roots divide off the root trunk
In general, the amount of curvature is greater or lesser on the mesial surface than on a distal surface of the same tooth
greater
What tooth has the greatest amount of mesial curvature?
central incisors
