Ch 1 sec 1-2 Flashcards
What is the “dentition”
All of the teeth in the mouth at that stage of life.
How many sets of dentition do humans have?
Two. Primary dentition and permanent dentition
What is the upper jawbone called?
Maxillae
What is the lower jawbone called?
Mandible
What is the name of the arch of teeth in upper jawbone?
maxillary arch
What is the name of the arch of teeth in lower jawbone?
mandibular arch
define quadrant
one fourth of all the teeth in that dentition. There are 4 quadrants.
How many teeth in each primary dentition quadrant?
5
How are teeth in each primary quadrant further broken down? (3 classes)
1) 2 incisors (central and lateral)- cut off pieces of food
2) 1 canine- pierce and hold food
3) 2 molars (1st and 2nd)- grind food
How many teeth are present in permanent dentition?
8
How are teeth in each primary quadrant further broken down? (4 classes)
1) 2 incisors (central and lateral)
2) 1 canine
3) 2 premolars (1st and second)
4) 3 molars (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)
What is the order in which you properly ID teeth?
1) Dentition (primary or permanent)
2) arch (maxillary or mandibular)
3) quadrant (right or left)
4) type (central, lateral, 1st. 2nd, 3rd)
5) class (incisor, canine, premolar, molar)
What are the anterior teeth?
canines and incisors
What are the posterior teeth?
premolars and molars
FDI System stands for?
Federation of Dentaire Internationale
What does 1, 2, 3, or 4 mean in FDI?
1= permanent, maxillary, right quadrant 2= permanent, maxillary, left quadrant 3= permanent, mandibular, left quadrant 4= permanent, mandibular, right quadrant
What does 5, 6, 7, 8 mean in FDI?
5= primary, maxillary, right quadrant 6= primary, maxillary, left quadrant 7= primary, mandibular, left quadrant 8= primary, mandibular, right quadrant
First digit in FDI denotes?
quadrant, arch, and dentition
The second digit in FDI denotes?
tooth position in each quadrant relative to the mid-line
How is the second number in FDI determined?
central incisor of each quadrant is 1. And you move along the quadrant until the 3rd molar is numbered 8
Palmer Notation System is used mostly by?
orthodontists, United Kingdom
Palmer systems uses brackets to denote?
the 4 quadrants of teeth
What is similar between the Palmer system and the FDI?
Both use the numbers 1-8 to denote the permanent teeth starting from the central incisor to 3rd molar
What is used to denote primary teeth in Palmer system?
letters A-E
