Privileges and limitations of Private Pilot
- May not act as PIC for compensation or hire, or carry Pax or property for compensation or hire
- May not pay less than pro rata share (fuel, oil, rental, etc.)
- Can be reimbursed for SAR operations (fuel, oil, rental, etc)
- Can act as PIC for a charity, if conducted according to FARs
- May act as PIC in connection to business, if flight is incidental to business
- May demonstrate an airplane to buyer if you have more than 200 flight hours
- May tow glider with some training and 100 hours PIC time
Eligibility for private pilots certificate
- 17 years old
- Read, write, speak, and understand English
- Pass written and practical tests
- Have necessary ground and flight training endorsements
- Meet experience requirements
- Have at least 3rd class medical
Private Pilot must carry, while acting as PIC,
- Valid pilot certificate
- Photo ID
- Current medical certificate
Privileges and limitations of student pilot
- No passengers
- Cannot carry property for compensation or hire
- Cannot fly in furtherance of a business
- Cannot fly with a flight or surface visibility of less than:
- 3sm during the day
- 5sm at night
- Flight must be made with visual references to the surface
Night Currency for Pax Ops
- 3 stop and go’s at night
- Performed 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise
- Must be in the same category, class, and type (if type is required)
Daytime Currency for Pax Ops
- 3 touch and go’s
- Must be in the same category, class, and type (if type is required)
“High Performance Airplane”
- Engine with MORE THAN 200 HP (200 HP is not High performance)
- To act as PIC:
- Must receive ground/flight training from appropriately rated CFI in high performance AC OR simulator.
- Must be found proficient and receive endorsement (one time endorsement) from CFI
“Complex AC”
- Retractable landing gear, constant speed propeller, and flaps, including AC with FADEC.
- To act as PIC:
- Must receive ground/flight training from appropriately rated CFI in high performance AC or simulator.
- Must be found proficient and receive endorsement (one time endorsement) from CFI
What time can a pilot log as SIC?
- May log SIC time only for time during which they:
- Are qualified IAW SIC requirements and occupy crewmember station in AC requiring more than one pilot by TCDS, or
- Holds appropriate category, class, and instrument rating for AC being flown and more than one pilot is required by TCDS or regs under which flight is to be conducted
What types of ASEL AC require additional endorsements?
- High performance - AC with more than 200 HP
- High altitude
- Complex
- Tailwheel
With respect to airmen, define “category”
Broad classification of AC, i.e. airplane, rotorcraft, glider, etc
With respect to airmen, define “class”
Classification of AC within category having similar op characteristics, i.e. Single engine land, multiengine land, etc
With respect to airmen, define “type”
A specific make and model of AC
What are the requirements to remain current as a private pilot?
- Receive flight review within preceding 24 months by authorized instructor, and receive endorsement
- To carry Pax, within the preceding 90 days:
- 3 touch and go’s as sole manipultor of controls in same category, class, and type (if type is required)
- Tailwheel AC must be made to a full stop
- Night op’s require 3 stop and go’s
What medical certificate is required for private pilot and how long is it valid?
- Must hold at least a 3rd class medical
- Under 40:
- 60th month after the month of the date of examination
- Over 40:
- 24th month after the month of the date of examination
