cestodes, trematodes, hints Flashcards
taenia solium: transmission and disease
ingestion of larvae encysted in undercooked pork, or ingestion of eggs.
if you ingest the larvae, you get an intestinal infection. if you ingest the eggs, you get cysticercosis or neurocysticercosis.
tapeworm
taenia solium: treatment
praziquantel for ingestion of eggs and cysticercosis. albendazole for neurocysticercosis
diphyllobothrium latum: transmission, disease, and tx
ingestion of larvae from raw freshwater fish. causes B12 deficiency and anemia b/c tapeworm competes for B12 in the intestine
treat with praziquantel
Echinococcus granulosus transmission, disease, and tx
ingestion of eggs from dog feces
cuases hydatid cysts in the liver. they may cause anaphylaxis if antigens are released, so surgens preinject with ethanol to kill cysts before removal.
treat with albendazole.
What is the transmission, disease, and tx of schistosoma?
snails are the host. flukes can penetrate human skin. causes liver and spleen graunlomas, fibrosis, and inflammation. chronic infection with schistosoma hematobium can cause squamous cell CA of the bladder. treat with praziquantel
Clonhorchis sinensis: transmission, disease, and tx
transmitted by undercooked fish
cuases biliary tract inflammation and pigmented gallstones. associated with cholangiocarcinoma.
treat wtih praziquantel
parasite associated with biliary tract disease, cholangiocarcinoma
clonhorchis sinensis
parasite associated with brain cysts and seizures
taenia solium
parasite associated with hematuria and bladder cancer
schistosoma haematobium
parasite associated with liver cysts
echanococcus granulosus
parasite associated with microcytic anemia
