To detect pre cancerous cells

Checks cells for infection that can cause cervical cancer

Abnormal changes in the cell lining the cervix
What is squamous metaplasia in the cervix?
Change from columnar epithelium to squamous

HPV 16
What are the risk factors of cervical cancer?
HPV, sexually transmitted diseases, long term use of contraceptives
What is the most common type of cervical cancer?
Squamous cell carcinoma
What is the processing of collecting cells for testing?
Smear test - cells collected from tissue surface with a swab and placed into a tube. Once in the lab debris and mucus are separated by by a vacuum membrane and the cervical cells are examined on a slide
