Cerebral cortex laminae Flashcards
Lamina 1
Molecular Layer
Most superficial layer containing horizontal neurons of Cajal.
Lamina 2
External granular layer with small pyramidal neurons and many small stellate neurons
Important for processing sensory information.
Lamina 3
Pyramidal layer (external pyramidal) with medium and large pyramidal neurons and few small stellate neurons
Involved in cortical processing.
Lamina 4
Internal granular layer with small stellate neurons
Plays a role in sensory input integration.
Lamina 5
Ganglionic layer (internal pyramidal) with large and medium pyramidal neurons and small stellate neurons
Key for output to subcortical structures.
Lamina 6
Multiformic layer (fusiform) and the deepest layer with modified pyramidal neurons
Involved in feedback to the thalamus.
