-mnot given for more than 3 wk (1wk ideal)
what causes chronic insomnia?
- anxiety
- depression
- alcohol/drug abuse
when is tx given in chronic insomnia?
when there is an underlying psychiatric compliant
what is given as tx in insomnia?
- long acting benzodiazepines
- short acting benzodiazepines
- z-hyponotics
give examples of long acting benzodiazepines
- nitrazepam
- diazepam
- flurazepam
when is long-acting benzodiazepines used in insomnia?
- used for sleep maintenance
- higher hangover effect following day
give examples of short-acting benzodiazepines
- loprazolam
- lormetazepam
- temazepam
short acting benzodizapines s/e
hangover effect, withdrawal symptoms
- little or no hangover effect
- sleep onset
- high chance of withdrawal symptoms
give examples of Z-hypnotics?
- zolpidem
- zopiclone
what class of drug is zolpidem + zopiclone ?
CNS depressants
when does dependency for zolpidem + zopiclone occur?
- 3-14DY of use
- should be taken intermittently
- only use for 4WK max
who should avoid benzodiazepines + Z-hypnotics?
elderly due to falls and injury
