Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
Drugs agents that act on the brain and spinal cord are used for medical and nonmedical purposes
Central nervous system (CNS)
The CNS contains how many compounds that serve as neurotransmitters?
21
Neurotransmitters of the CNS
Monoamines
Amino Acids
Purines
Opioid Peptides
Nonopioid Peptides
Others like
Acetylcholine histamine
Certain drugs used in psychiatry antipsychotics and antidepressants must be taken for several weeks before full therapeutic effects develop.
Increased Therapeutic Effects
When CNS drugs are taken long term, the intensity of side effects may decrease (while therapeutic effects remain undiminished).
Decreased Side Effect
A decreased response occurring in the course of prolonged drug use
Tolerance
A state in which abrupt discontinuation of drug use will precipitate a withdrawal syndrome
Physical dependence
Can protect the CNS from toxic substances, but can also block entry of medicines into the CNS.
Blood-brain barrier
Are usually indicated for specific psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia delusional disorders, bipolar disorder, depressive psychoses and drug induced psychoses
Psychotherapeutics
Antipsychotics
-First Generation Antipsychotics (GGAs)
-Second Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs)
Also called conventional antipsychotics that blocks receptors for dopamine in the CNS and causes serious movement disorders called EPS
First Generation Antipsychotics (FGAs)
Also called atypical antipsychotics that moderately blocks dopamine but stronger blocking of receptors for serotonin and it decrease blocking of dopamine that leads to lesser risk of EPS
-Second Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs)
Chronic psychotic illness characterized by disordered thinking and reduced ability to comprehend reality
Schizophrenia
Principal symptoms are depressed and loss of pleasure or interest in all or nearly all of one’s usual activities and past times that persist for longer than 2 months or are characterized by marked functional impairment, morbid preoccupation with worthlessness, suicidal ideation or psychotic symptoms or psychomotor retardation.
Major depression
5 Major Antidepressants
-Tricyclic antidepressants
-Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
-serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
-Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
-Atypical antidepressants
