Cementum Flashcards
What does cementum cover/
Root dentine
Cementum is similar in structure to ….
Bone: collagen matrix and lamellar arrangement
What does cementum provide fibres with?
Provides anchorage to bone for fibres, and attachment for some periodontal fibres
What are the 2 types of cementum?
Cellular and acellular
Describe cellular cementum
Contains cementocytes, later form of cementum (secondary cementum), present in apical part of root and in furcation regions
Which cells lay down cementum?
Cementocytes
What are furcation regions?
Where the roots separate e.g. in molars
Where is cellular cementum located?
In the apical part of the root and in furcation regions
Describe acellular cementum
No cells within, usually adjacent to dentine. First formed (primary cementum)
Which type of cementum is usually adjacent to dentine?
Acellular cementum
Which cementum is termed a) primary cementum and b) secondary cementum
a) Acellular
b) Cellular
What is the amelo-cemental junction?
Where cementum meets enamel
What happens if cementum does not reach enamel and the amelo-cemental junction?
Some dentine will be exposed
What are periodontal fibres/Sharpey’s fibres?
The fibres that connect that tooth to the bone
Describe acellular extrinsic fibre cementum
- Sharpey’s fibres enter cementum from the outside (periodontal ligament) => extrinsic. Equivalent to primary acellular cementum
- Present on cervical 2/3 of roots. Role in tooth attachment.
