can be pruned to high headed, so good for street tree, parks, private yards, etc
ornamental and not high maintenance
looks a bit like an american elm at maturity
commonly used as elm substitute in the US and eastern Canada

quite distinctive large leaves 5-10 cm L and 2-5 cm W
ovate leaft
serrate margin except at base
often lobsided leaf base, but meet at the same point on midrib
alternate
long acuminate leaf tip

alternate buds
multiple overlapping scales
lenticels often present on new growth
Hackberry- inflorescence
monoecious or polygamous
flowers small and inconspicuous
often male flowers in cluster near base of tree
often female flowers near top of tree
caterpillar like stigma
Hackberry- fruit
fruit are small green (not edible) drupe
turning dark red/purple with age
hard to see fruit- it is small (4-7 mm) wide

unique bark
warty
turning brown with age
