Acer- characteristics
large shallow rooted deciduous trees, shrubs or shrub-like trees
Leaves are opposite, plamately lobed and simple
flowers are imperfect and can be monoecious or dioecious depending on the species

opposite buds- often covered with white bloom
terminal buds much larger than axillary buds
internode space can be large on seedlings

greyish blue waxy coating on plants that can be rubbed off

3-7 leaflets
3-5 is most common
the only maple with compound leaves; all other have simple leaves
margins vary from almost entire to sparsely serrate

wing longer than seed

female flowers; lack colour- not showy
male flowers- reddish, therefore more noticeable

moslty golden yellow but can have tones of red or purple

Often attract aphids which secrete sticky honeydew on area below the tree; not recommended near decks, patios, driveways, etc.
attracts box elder bug; nuisance bug as they want to overwinter in homes; amass in autumn in hot locations; not harmful to tree

monoecious
under side of leaf is silver
top side of leaf is shiny, often lighter green

one of the largest trees (height) in Sask

opposite buds- multiple buds at node
stems and buds not glaucous
new growth reddish with white lenticels
older growth brown

largest samara of acer genus
shed in spring
equal size; 5 cm long
seeds will germinate as soon as they are shed vs other acer germinate the following spring

new bark very silvery and smooth
older bark beginning to furrow
lines in bark

mostly yellow but can be red/reddish

Tatarian maple- leaves
3 lobed
readily hybridized with Ginnala maple
similar in shape/size to Ginnala
lobes are not as distinct

central lobe often much longer than other lobes
