Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
The process cells use to release energy that is needed to do work
What is used to fuel this process?
Glucose which is created in the Calvin Cycle of photosynthesis
What are the three ways of releasing the energy stored in foods?
Aerobic cell respiration, anaerobic cell respiration & Fermentation
What is the first stage of cellular respiration?
Glycolysis which is used in both aerobic and anaerobic cell respiration
What is the result of glycolysis?
2 ATP gained, 2 pyruvates gained and 2 NADH gained
What is the second stage of cellular respiration?
Pyruvate Oxidation
What is the third stage of cellular respiration?
The Krebs Cycle
What is the fourth stage of cellular respiration?
Oxidative Phosphorylation (AKA Electron Transport Chain & Chemiosmosis)
How many NET ATP molecules are there at the end of oxidative phosphorylation?
36
Where does Glycolysis take place?
Cytoplasm (Mitochondria)
Where does Pyruvate Oxidation take place?
Matrix (Mitochondria)
Where does the Krebs Cycle take place?
Matrix (Mitochondria)
Where does Oxidative Phosphorylation take place?
Inner Membrane (Mitochondria)
What is Anaerobic Cell Respiration?
When oxygen is not available as the final electron acceptor, Anaerobic cell respiration is used to keep certain organisms alive
Which process is more efficient? Anaerobic or Aerobic Cell Respiration?
Aerobic is way more efficient than Anaerobic because it produces 32-36 ATP whereas Anaerobic only produces 2 ATP
