Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Describe cellular respiration
Catabolic exothermic reaction that occurs in four stages in three different parts of the cell
Give the four stages of cellular respiration
Glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, Kreb’s cycle (citric acid cycle), electron transport chain
Briefly describe glycolysis
10 step anaerobic enzymatic process that occurs in the cytoplasm, splitting six-carbon glucose molecules into two three-carbon molecules
Briefly describe pyruvate oxidation
One step process in the matrix of the mitochondria. Decarboxylation occurs to the pyruvate molecule
Briefly describe the Kreb’s cycle (citric acid cycle)
8-step enzyme-controlled cycle in the matrix of the mitrochondria. Makes a net two ATP through SLP
Briefly describe the electron transport chain
Occurs in the cristae (inner mitochondrial membrane) and the matrix. Produces the bulk of the ATP via oxidative phosphorylation
What is the final product of cellular respiration?
Water
