Cellular Biology Flashcards
Cell wherein
- DNA confined in a region not enclosed by a membrane known as nucleon region
- No organelles
- w/o nucleus
- smaller in size
Prokaryotic cell
Cell wherein
- DNA is confined in a nucleus that has a double membrane
- contains membrane-bound organelles
- w/ a nucleus
- larger in size
Eukaryotic cell
Contains the genes; regulates all cellular process; commands center of the cell
Nucleus
regulates protein synthesis
Ribosomes
Synthesis of lipids; metabolism of carbohydrates; detoxification of drugs and poisons
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Modifies, stores and send proteins to its specific destinations
Golgi Apparatus
Digest macromolecules and cellular respiration by-product by the action of hydrolytic enzymes
Lysosomes
Sites of cellular respiration; generates ATP by extracting it from sugar, fats and other energy sources using oxygen
Mitocondria
Site of photosynthesis; converts solar energy to chemical energy by the absorption of light to trigger the formation of organic compounds such as sugars and carbohydrates
Chloroplast
Breaks fatty acid into smaller molecules; detoxifies alcohol and other harmful substance by transferring hydrogen to poison to oxygen
Peroxisomes
Maintains the stability and shape of the cell; serves as the traffic way of vesicles and organelles in the cell
Cytoskeleton
Protects the plant cell, maintains its shape and prevents excessive water uptake
Cell wall
Channels that links cells for cell-to-cell communication
Plasmodesmata
Forms spindle fibers during cell division
Centrioles
Serves as the storage of waste products in plant cells; site of breakdown of wastes by hydrolysis
Central vacuole
