Cells Review Flashcards
What are the four major elements found in all cells?
• Life’s chemicals
•C, O, H, N
What are the functions of cells?
•Carry out all chemical activities needed to sustain life
What are cells defined as?
•The building blocks of all living things
What are the regions of the nucleus?
•Nuclear membrane
•Nucleolus
•Chromatin
What is the location of the nucleus?
•Surrounded by cytoplasm
•Located in center of cell
What are functions and traits of the nucleus?
•Largest membrane bound organelle
•Headquarters/master of cell
•Cell division
•Control of genetic information
•The replication and repair of DNA
•Transcription of information stored in DNA
What are the functions of nuclear membrane and characteristics?
•Barrier of nucleus
•Consists of a double phospholipid membrane
•Contains nuclear pores that allow for exchange of material with the rest of the cell
•Selectively permeable
Where are the nucleoli located and what are its functions?
•Nucleus contains one or more nucleoli
•Sites of ribosome production
•Ribosomes then migrate to the cytoplasm through nuclear pores
What is chromatin (when not dividing)?
•Composed of DNA and protein, scattered throughout the nucleus.
•Chromatin condenses to form chromosomes when the cell divides.
What is cytoplasm?
·Material outside the nucleus and inside the plasma membrane
What is cytosol?
·Fluid that suspends other elements
What are organelles?
·Metabolic machinery of the celll
What are inclusions?
·Non-functioning units (fats, pigments)
What are ribosomes and its functions/locations?
·Made of protein and RNA
·Sites of protein synthesis
·Located free in the cytoplasm and attached to rough e.r.
What is RNA?
·Protein complexes synthesized in the nucleolus and secreted into the cytoplasm
What is rough endoplasmic reticulum?
·Studded with ribosomes
·Site where building materials of cellular membrane are formed
What is smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
·Functions in cholesterol synthesis and breakdown, fat metabolism, and detoxification of drugs
What is endoplasmic reticulum?
·Fluid-filled tubules for carrying substances
·A network of tubular channels that extend throughout the outer nuclear membrane
·Specializes in the synthesis and transport of protein and lipid components
What is the golgi apparutus?
·Modifies and packages proteins
·A network of smooth membranes and vesicles located near the nucleus
·Secretory vesicles
What are lysosomes?
·Contain enzymes that digest unusable materials within the cell
·Examples: amino acids, fatty acids, sugar
What are peroxisomes?
·Membranous sacs of oxidase enzymes
·Produce hydrogen peroxide
·Detoxify harmful substances
·Breakdown free radicals (highly reactive chemicals)
What is the mitochondria?
·Powerhouse of the cell
·Changes shape continuously
·Provides ATP for cellular energy
·Carry out reactions where oxygen is used to breakdown food
·PH control, calcium homeostasis, cell signaling
What is the cytoskeleton?
·Network of protein structures that extend throughout the cytoplasm
·Provides the cell with an internal framework
What is the plasma membrane?
·Barrier for cell contents
·Double phospholipid bilayer (fat-water): hydrophilic heads, hydrophobic tails
·Other materials: protein, cholesterol, glycoproteins
