Cells and Tissues of Digestive System Flashcards
What do mucous cells secrete?
Mucous cells secrete an alkaline mucus that protects the epithelium against shear stress and acid.
What do G-cells secrete?
G-cells secrete gastrin which stimulates acid secretion.
What do parietal cells secrete?
Parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid.
What do chief cells secrete?
Chief cells secrete digestive enzymes that break down proteins.
What do goblet cells secrete?
Goblet cells secrete a mucus that protects the stomach lining from acid.
What is the mucosa?
The innermost layer of the muscle wall of the digestive system, consisting of epithelium, a loose connective tissue layer called lamina propria, and a thin layer of smooth muscle called muscularis mucosa.
What is the submucosa?
A thick layer of loose connective tissue that surrounds the mucosa.
What is the muscular layer of the digestive system?
Smooth muscle responsible for the movement of the digestive tract, arranged into two layers: inner circular layer and outer longitudinal layer.
What are villi?
Tiny finger-like projections that protrude from the epithelial lining of the intestinal wall, creating a large surface area to volume ratio.
What are microvilli?
Tiny, hair-like structures found on epithelial cells.
