Disruptions in the Cell Cycle and Cancer Flashcards
How does Cancer occur
Cancer occurs when cells lose control of the cell cycle and divides uncontrollably.
Why does cell cancer occur?
Failure of apoptosis
Loss of cell cycle regulation
Mutations in DNA
Characteristics of Cancer Cell
- Uncontrolled division
- No apoptosis
- Forms tumors
How is the Cell Cycle Regulated
The cell cycle is regulated through checkpoints that ensure accurate division.
What happens if these checkpoints fail
If these checkpoints fail, damaged or abnormal cells may continue to divide, increasing the risk of uncontrolled cell growth and cancer
What happens if apoptosis fails
If apoptosis malfunctions, cells that should die continue to survive and divide. This can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, the accumulation of mutations, and the development of cancer.
Steps in Development of Cancer
- Mutation in DNA
- Loss of Cell Cycle Control
- Apoptosis fails
