Cells and Fibers of the Body Flashcards
4 basic tissue types
Epithelium
Muscle
Nervous
Connective Tissue
Connective tissue consists of 2 components
Cells
ECM
ECM consists of 2 components
Ground substance
Fibres
5 fixed cells
Fibroblasts/cytes Adipocytes Plasma cells Mast cells Macrophages
5 Wandering cells (can be both though)
Lymphocytes Neutrophils Eosinophils Basophils Monocytes
Fibroblast/cyte function
Maintain integrity of tissues with slow, continuous turnover of ECM
B cells
Mature in bone marrow
Enter blood
Can be activated by antigen and become plasma cells or memory B cells
Humoral immunity
T cells
Leave bone marrow and mature in thymus
Involved in cell mediated/adaptive immunity
NK cells
Mature in bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, thymus
Kill virally infected cells and tumours
Innate immune response
Mast cells
Found in all connective tissues (esp skin, GI lining, around blood vessels)
Allergic response
Synthesize and secrete heparin and histamine
Names for macrophages in
- Liver
- Skin
- Bone
- Kupffer cells
- Langerhans cells
- Osteoclasts
What cell type is the first responders
Neutrophils
Pneumonic showing the order of which WBCs are most abundant in blood
Never Let Monkey Eat Banana
Blood under normal physiological conditions
Function of monocytes/macrophages
Tissue scavengers (phagocytosis) Defense Cleaning house Importnat in immune mechanisms Often first to contact antigens Antigen presenting cells
Neutrophil functions
Phagocytes
Defense against bacteria
