Cells Flashcards
What is Mass?
A measurable property of a physically body and a measure of its resistance to acceleration when a force is applied. Different to weight. Weight is dependant on gravity.
Usually measured in Kilograms (Kg).
What is an Atom?
100 Picometers.
Made up of sub atomic particles called Neutron, Protons and Electrons.
Makes up every solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
Had a nucleus but it mostly empty space.
What elements do humans consist of?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Phosphorus.
Cellular Malfunction can cause what?
Physical Illness or Mental Illness.
How long can cells survive without Oxygen?
Brain Cells = 3 Minutes.
Cardiac Cells = 45 Cells.
Can all cells replicate? Example?
No!
Red Blood Cells can.
Brain Cells can’t = Strokes.
What is Homeostasis?
Relates to the optimum condition for Efficient Cell Function.
What do cells need for Homeostasis?
Oxygen, Nutrients, the ability to eliminate waste products, suitable waste and electrolyte balance, a sustainable acid and temperature environment.
Example of biological systems that maintain the cells homeostatic conditions.
Cardiac systems = Self Contained without any contact with the outside world.
Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, and Urinary systems = Have contact with the outside environment.
What is the Nervous System?
A network of nerves that responds to the changes inside and outside of the body. It maintains homeostasis and cellular survival.
Works alongside the Hormone System (Which reacts slower).
Made up of Neurons which can’t divide but do need O2 and Glucose. They don’t need insulin to break down the glucose and are therefore subject to damage from Hyperglycaemia in Diabetes.
