Cells Flashcards
Ribosomes
Produce protein.
Rrna- protein complex
Mrna- messenger
tRNA- transfer
Nucleus
Command center of the cell. Where DNA is located
Phospholipid
Surround a cell for structure and protection. Has a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail that form a phospholipid bilayer. This layer makes up cell membrane.
Cell membrane
Outer layer. Nothing goes in nothing comes out.
Prokaryotic cells
Cell of a bacteria. Simplest organism
. No nucleus
. Has a cell wall and ribosomes
Two domains of prokaryotes
Archaea- bacteria that can live in extremely hot or cold blames
Bacteria
Cell wall
Only in plants and bacteria. Composed of peptidoglycan.
Protect the cell.
Maintain the shape.
Prevent excessive uptake or loss of water.
Flagella
Used for locomotion. Only eukaryotic cell with flagella is sperm.
Eukaryotic cells
Have a nucleus.
Process a cytoskeleton to maintain structure
Endomembrane system
Series of membranes throughout the cytoplasm.
Divides cell into compartments where diff functions occur
One of the fundamental distinctions between eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Has ribosomes attached to give rough appearance. Synthesis of proteins to be packaged and sent to plasma membrane or lysosomes.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Used for synthesis, enzymes and lipids, and detox
Golgi apparatus
Flattened sacks of interconnected membranes.
Packages and distributes synthesized molecules.
Lysosomes
Membrane bound digestive vesicles. Also gets rid of waste.
Arise from Golgi apparatus.
Enzyme catalyze breakdown of macromolecules
Vacuoles
Membrane bound structures in plants
- used for storage
