Cell Wall Inhibitors (Vancomycin ) Flashcards
Vancomycin is ………
Tricyclic glycopeptide
MOA of vancomycin :
1) binds to peptidoglycan precursors
2) disrupting polymerisation and cross-linking required for maintenance of cell wall integrity.
Anti-bacterial spectrum of vancomycin:
Effective against gram-positive bacteria including MRSA and MSSE ( methicillin sensitive staphylococcus epidermidis )
Vancomycin pharmacodynamics :
1) bactericidal
2) time- and concentration- dependant antibiotic
MOR of vancomycin :
Alteration of binding affinity to peptidoglycan precursors
Administration of vancomycin :
Oral and IV
Oral vancomycin is used in :
Severe antibiotic associated pseudomembranous colitis
IV vancomycin is used in :
1) MRSA skin infections
2) infective endocarditis
Adverse effects of vancomycin :
1) Ototoxicity
2) Nephrotoxicity
3) Red man Syndrome
