Cell Wall Inhibitors ( Other Beta-lactams ) Flashcards
Other B-lactams include :
1) Carbapenem
2) monobactam
Carbapenem derivatives :
1) Meropenem
2) Doripenem
3) Ertapenem
4) Imipenem / cilastatin
Antibacterial Spectrum of Carbapenem :
1) broad-spectrum antibiotic
2) Resist beta lactamases so it is effective against beta-lactamase producing gram negative and gram positive microorganisms , anaerobes and pseudomonas aurigenosa
Monobactam derivative :
Aztreonam
Antibacterial spectrum of aztreonam :
- Lacks activity against gram-positive bacteria
- effective against gram-negative bacteria including P.aeruginosa
- susceptible to ESBLs
Adverse effects of aztreonam:
1) Relatively non-toxic
2) little cross-reactivity with other beta lactams
Combination of beta-lactamses and Carbapenem :
Meropenem and Vaborbactam
Meropenem and Vaborbactam combination is effective against ………….. and indicated in ……… :
ESBL-producing bacteria / Management of complicated urinary tract infections
