Cell transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The process where particles move from a high concentration to a low to concentration making an even spread in liquids an gases.
What is the difference in concentration called?
Concentration gradient
What is an example of diffusion in animals?
The alveoli in the lungs where O(2) diffuses into the blood and CO(2) diffuses out
What is an example of diffusion in plants?
In leaves, O(2) diffuses out and CO(2) diffuses out.
When temperature increases what happens to the rate of diffusion?
It increases
What is osmosis?
The process where water moves from a high concentration to a low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane
What is a hypertonic solution?
A solution with a lower concentration of water so the water inside the cell moves out and it becomes plasmolyzed (shrunk)
What is an isotonic solution?
A solution with the same concentration of water so the water says inside the cell and it stays flaccid (the same)
What is a hypotonic solution?
A solution with a higher concentration of water so the water moves inside the cell and it becomes turgid (swollen)
What is an example of osmosis in plants?
The root hair cells that absorb water from the soil
What is an example of osmosis in animals?
The villi in the intestine absorb water from the intestine
What is active transport?
The movement of particles from and area of low concentration to an area of high concentration using energy.
What is an example of active transport in animals?
The villi in the intestine use energy to absorb the last particles in the intestine
What is an example of active transport in plants?
The root hair cells absorb the last minerals using active transport
