Blood vessels and the heart Flashcards
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, Veins, Capillaries
What makes up blood?
Plasma, a liquid that contains:
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What do red blood cells do?
Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body
What do white blood cells do?
White blood cells can make anti-bodies and eat pathogens
What do platelets do?
Clot blood and make scabs
What are the properties of arteries?
Highest pressure
Elasticated to withstand high pressures
Thick so they don’t burst
Take blood away from the heart
What are the properties of veins?
Low pressure Red blood cells carry CO(2) mostly Much wider Has valves to stop backflow Carry blood to heart
What are the properties of capillaries?
Thin to allow diffusion and active transport
Very low pressure to stop bursting
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, left ventricle
What takes blood away from the heart to the lungs?
Pulmonary artery
What takes blood back to the heart from the lungs?
Pulmonary vein
What takes blood from the body to the heart?
Vena Cava
What takes blood from the heart to the rest of the body?
Aorta
