Cell Theory Flashcards
Serves as the foundation of biology and is the most accepted theory about cells
Cell Theory
- an instrument that can be used to observe small objects
- breakthrough of biology
- led to the discovery of cells
microscope
who invented the microscope?
zacharias janssen
After viewing a cork tissue under a microscope, he observed tiny little compartments which he described as cells (he is the one to coin this term) and compiled all of his observation on a book titled “Micrographia.” His finding laid the groundwork for cell theory by revealing cells as the tiniest constituents of life.
Robert Hooke
After creating his own microscope, he discovered bacteria and called them “animalcules.” This led to the widespread recognition that there are living organisms beyond the naked eye and inspired scientists to use microscope. He is also the first one to observe red blood cells and sperm cells.
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
A botanist who studied plants under the microscope and the first to recognize that all plants are made up of cells.
Matthias Schleiden
After studying animals, he also came to the conclusion that all animals are made up of cells as well. Both of his and Schleiden’s observation led to the statement of the cell theory: “all living things are made up of one or more cells.”
Theodor Schwann
He was the one to propose that all living cells arise from pre-existing cells
Rudolf Virchow
- the scientist who combined schwann and schleiden’s idea
henri dutrochet
Recite Classical Cell Theory & Modern Cell Theory
- all organisms consist of 1 or more cells
- cells arise from pre-existing cells
- all cells are the basic structural and functional unit of life
- cell contains hereditary info (DNA) that can be passed on
- all cells contain same chemical composition and metabollic acts
- energy flows within cells to perform
