Cell structure 3 Flashcards
What is the Golgi apparatus?
a stack of flattened sacs called cisternae
How is the Golgi apparatus formed?
a stack is being formed at one end from vesicles
they then bud of from the ER
and then broken down again at the other end
What happens after the processing proteins from the RER?
transported in the Golgi vesicles to other parts of the cell
What is secretion?
releasing molecules from cells
What is a matrix?
finger-like cristae which project inside to form the matrix
What’s the main function of mitochondria?
aeorbic respiration
How is ATP formed?
released energy from sugars and fats
where does respiration take place?
in the matrix and the inner membrane
where are electron carriers found?
in the cristae
Why does ATP spread easily?
soulble and small
How is energy released from ATP
ATP is converted to ADP, this is called hydrolysis
What are S units?
a measure of how substances sediment in a high-speed centrifuge
How many S in cytoplasm?
80S
How many S in chloroplasts and mitochondria?
70S
What are ribosomes made of?
rRNA and proteins
