Cell Structure Flashcards
Sperm cell
Tail- to swim to fertilise egg
Mitochondria- for respiration to swim to fertilise egg
Enzymes- in head to break down the egg wall
Nerve cell
Very long- to cover distance in body
Branched connections- to connect to other nerve cells
Muscle cell
Mitochondria- to release energy for contraction
Contains protein fibres- can contract to make cell shorter
Root hair cell
Grows into long ‘hairs’ to increase surface area for absorption
Mitochondria- to release energy for the active transport of mineral ions from soil
Phloem and xylem
Form tubes in plants- to help transport substances
Long- join from end to end
Xylem- hollow in centre
Phloem- have very few sub-cellular structures to allow things to flow easily
Prokaryotic cells
Single celled
Small single loop of DNA
Small rings of DNA called plasmids
Smaller than eukaryotic cells
